Bali does not issue visas. It is a province of Indonesia, and you are applying to enter the country, not the island — which is why searching for a "Bali visa" turns up Indonesian immigration pages and a great deal of confusion.
There are several routes in. Which one applies to you depends on your passport, how long you are staying and why you are coming. This page explains how to work out which is yours, and sends you to the official channel to do it.
Before anything else: immigration rules, fees and platforms change, sometimes at short notice. The authority is the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration. Confirm everything on the official immigration portal before you travel. Nothing on this page replaces that.

What changed, and why everyone is searching "eVisa"
For years the standard answer was simple: turn up, join the visa-on-arrival queue, pay at a counter.
The search data suggests that is changing fast. Over the three months to August 2026, searches for bali visa on arrival fell from roughly 1,300 a month to 480 — a decline of about 63% — while bali evisa held above 3,600. Travellers are moving from the counter to the online application.
The practical reason is the queue. Applying online before you fly means walking to the automated gates or a much shorter line rather than joining the payment queue at Ngurah Rai, which after a long-haul arrival is worth the ten minutes it takes at home.
This is an observation about how people are behaving, not a statement of policy. The counter route still exists. Check the official portal for what is currently offered.
The electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA)
The e-VOA is the same permission as the counter visa on arrival, applied for and paid online before departure.
Who it is for: tourists and short visits from eligible countries, for a stay within the standard tourist period.
How it works: you apply on the official portal, upload your passport details and a photograph, pay online, and receive the approved visa by email. You present it on arrival — printed or on your phone.
What it does not allow: working, earning money in Indonesia, or staying beyond the permitted period without extending.
When to apply: well before departure rather than at the airport. Processing is usually quick, but "usually" is not a plan for the night before a flight.
The official application platform is the Indonesian immigration e-visa service, reachable through imigrasi.go.id. Start there rather than from a search result.
Visa on arrival at the counter
Still available at Ngurah Rai and other international entry points at the time of writing.
You join a queue, pay at a counter, and receive the same permission. The disadvantages are the queue itself — which after a long flight, with children or at a busy arrival hour, is a genuine cost — and payment card systems that do not always cooperate.
If you have not applied online, this is the fallback rather than a failure. Confirm on the official portal that it applies to your nationality before relying on it.
Visa-free entry
Indonesia operates visa-free short-stay arrangements with a number of countries.
Two things matter. The list changes, and the visa-free period is usually shorter and less flexible than the visa on arrival — in particular, a visa-free entry generally cannot be extended, while a visa on arrival generally can.
That second point catches people out. If there is any chance you will want to stay longer, the paid route may be the better choice even if you qualify for the free one.

Longer stays and other purposes
Beyond a standard tourist stay, Indonesia has a range of visa classes: business visits, longer social-cultural visas, investor and retirement categories, and work permits.

The rules are specific and the consequences of getting them wrong fall on you.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm which route applies to you on the official portal, based on your nationality and purpose.
- Check your passport. It must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival, with blank pages.
- Have your documents ready — see the checklist below.
- Go to the official platform via imigrasi.go.id. Not via a search advertisement.
- Complete the application with details exactly as they appear in your passport. A mismatched name or number is the most common cause of rejection.
- Pay with an international card.
- Wait for the approval email and check it against your passport details.
- Save it offline — printed and on your phone. Airport wifi is not a plan.
- Present it on arrival, with your onward ticket and accommodation details if asked.

Extensions
A visa on arrival can generally be extended once, for a further period, either online or at an immigration office in Indonesia.
Two practical points. Start early — do not leave it to the final days, because processing takes time and overstaying carries a daily fine. And visa-free entries generally cannot be extended, which is the main argument for paying for the visa on arrival if your plans might change.

Common mistakes
Applying through the wrong site. Search results are full of intermediaries. Start at the official portal.
Name mismatches. Enter your details exactly as printed in the passport, including middle names and hyphens.
Passport validity. Six months from arrival, not from booking. Check the expiry date now.
Leaving it to the airport. Applying online the night before removes the queue, not the requirement.
Assuming a tourist visa allows work. It does not, including remote work for a foreign employer in some readings. Take advice.
Overstaying by a day or two. Fines are charged per day and the process at departure is unpleasant.
A warning about intermediary sites
Several of the highest-ranking results for Indonesian visa searches are private agencies, not government services.
They are not necessarily illegitimate — some are established businesses — but they charge a service fee on top of the official cost to submit a form you can complete yourself in about ten minutes. Some are designed to look like official portals.
How to tell. Government sites use the .go.id domain. If the address is anything else, you are on a commercial site.
If you would rather someone else handled it, that is a reasonable choice — just make it knowingly, and understand what you are paying for.

The application asks for the name and address of where you are staying. Have your booking confirmation open when you fill it in.
