Bali runs on WITA — Waktu Indonesia Tengah, Central Indonesian Time — which is UTC+8, all year. Indonesia does not observe daylight saving, so that offset never moves. The clock below is live.

If you have come here to work out whether it is a reasonable hour to call, or what time you will actually land, the rest of this page does that arithmetic for you.
Bali's time zone in one line
Bali sits in the Asia/Makassar zone, abbreviated WITA, at a fixed UTC+8. There is no summer time, no winter time and no seasonal shift. Whatever the difference between Bali and home is today, it is the same difference in six months — unless your clocks change, which is the part most people forget.
That single fact does more work than it looks. It means Bali is permanently aligned with Singapore, Perth, Hong Kong and Manila, and permanently one hour ahead of Jakarta.
How far ahead of you Bali is
| Where you are | Standard time | When your clocks go forward | Difference from Bali |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perth | UTC+8 | Never — no daylight saving | Same time |
| Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila | UTC+8 | Never | Same time |
| Jakarta, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City | UTC+7 | Never | 1 hour behind Bali |
| Tokyo | UTC+9 | Never | 1 hour ahead of Bali |
| Brisbane | UTC+10 | Never | 2 hours ahead of Bali |
| Sydney, Melbourne | UTC+10 | UTC+11, October to April | 2 hours ahead, or 3 in the Australian summer |
| Dubai | UTC+4 | Never | 4 hours behind Bali |
| London | UTC+0 | UTC+1, late March to late October | 8 hours behind, or 7 in British summer time |
| Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid | UTC+1 | UTC+2, late March to late October | 7 hours behind, or 6 in central European summer time |
| New York, Toronto | UTC−5 | UTC−4, March to November | 13 hours behind, or 12 in North American daylight time |
| Los Angeles, Vancouver | UTC−8 | UTC−7, March to November | 16 hours behind, or 15 in North American daylight time |
The pattern worth internalising: Bali never changes, so every seasonal shift in the difference comes from your end. Sydney guests gain an hour of difference each October. London and New York guests lose one each spring.
Indonesia has three time zones, and Bali is in the middle one

Indonesia stretches more than 5,000 kilometres from Sumatra to Papua — wider than the continental United States. It is divided into three zones.
| Zone | Abbreviation | Offset | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waktu Indonesia Barat — western | WIB | UTC+7 | Sumatra, Java, and western Kalimantan. Includes Jakarta |
| Waktu Indonesia Tengah — central | WITA | UTC+8 | Bali, Lombok, the rest of Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and southern and eastern Kalimantan |
| Waktu Indonesia Timur — eastern | WIT | UTC+9 | Maluku and Papua |
This catches people out on domestic flights. A flight from Jakarta to Denpasar that leaves at 08:00 and takes about an hour and three quarters does not land at 09:45 — it lands at about 10:45, because you have crossed into WITA. Flying back, you appear to arrive almost when you left.
Note also that the zone Bali belongs to is named after Makassar, in Sulawesi, not after Bali. That is an artefact of how the world's time-zone database names zones — after the largest city in the region — and nothing to do with where Balinese time is set.
Bali has not changed its clocks since 1945

The island has been on UTC+8 continuously since 23 September 1945. Before that, from February 1942, it had been on UTC+9 under Japanese wartime administration. Prior to 1932 it kept Makassar Mean Time, a local solar offset of 7 hours 57 minutes and 36 seconds.
Since 1945, nothing. No daylight saving has ever been applied. The time-zone database that governs how every phone, laptop and server in the world calculates Indonesian time carries no seasonal rule for the country at all.
The practical consequence is that any clock, calendar invitation or booking system that knows the zone will get Bali right without your help. The errors travellers actually make come from assuming Bali behaves like home and shifts twice a year.
Working out when you land

Long-haul arrivals into Ngurah Rai (DPS) are the moment the time difference stops being abstract.
The arithmetic is simple: take your departure time at home, add the flight duration, then add the difference from the table above. From London, a flight leaving at 21:00 with a total journey of 17 hours lands at 14:00 UK time, which is 21:00 in Bali the following day. From Sydney, a 06:00 departure with a six-hour flight lands at 12:00 Sydney time — 10:00 in Bali, the same morning.
Two things worth knowing once you have that number:
- Immigration and baggage take time. Budget an hour from wheels-down to being outside the terminal, more on a busy evening.
- Then there is the drive. Nirjhara is approximately 90 minutes from the airport by private transfer. A landing time of 21:00 is a resort arrival closer to 23:30 once you account for both. It is worth knowing before you book a first-night dinner.
When to call Bali, and when not to
For anyone coordinating with the island from abroad — planning a wedding, working with a travel designer, or simply calling a hotel — the workable overlap is narrower than it looks.
| Calling from | Bali business hours, 09:00–17:00 WITA, land at |
|---|---|
| Perth, Singapore | 09:00–17:00 — the whole working day overlaps |
| Sydney, in Australian winter | 11:00–19:00 — comfortable |
| Sydney, in Australian summer | 12:00–20:00 — call before mid-afternoon |
| Dubai | 05:00–13:00 — mornings only |
| London, in British summer time | 02:00–10:00 — call first thing |
| London, in winter | 01:00–09:00 — call at 09:00 sharp for the last hour of Bali's day |
| New York, in daylight time | 21:00–05:00 the previous evening — call at 21:00 for Bali's 09:00 |
| Los Angeles, in daylight time | 18:00–02:00 the previous evening — call in the early evening |
For guests from Europe and North America, the reliable move is to email rather than call, and to expect a reply during your night.
Balinese time is not only clock time
There is a second answer to "what time is it in Bali", and it is the one that tends to stay with people after they leave.
Alongside the Gregorian calendar, Bali keeps the Pawukon, a 210-day ritual calendar built from ten concurrent cycles of different lengths, and the Saka lunar calendar. Together they set the island's ceremonial year: temple anniversaries, Galungan and Kuningan, and Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, when the entire island — airport included — closes for twenty-four hours.
That last one matters practically. On Nyepi, no one travels, no lights are shown after dark, and the airport does not operate. It is the one day of the year when Bali's clocks are running and nothing else is.
It is also the clearest illustration of what makes the island's relationship with time different. Kedungu, where Nirjhara sits, is farmland as much as coastline, and the subak irrigation system that waters those fields is itself a calendar — a thousand-year-old schedule of water allocation that decides when each terrace floods and when it drains. The rice does not care what the clock says.
Frequently asked questions
What time is it in Bali right now?
Bali is on WITA, UTC+8, all year. The live clock at the top of this page shows the current time and the difference from wherever you are reading.
Does Bali have daylight saving time?
No. Indonesia has never applied daylight saving, and Bali has been on a fixed UTC+8 offset since September 1945. Any seasonal change in the difference between Bali and your city comes from your city's clocks, not Bali's.
What is the time difference between Bali and Australia?
Bali is two hours behind Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra during the Australian winter, and three hours behind Sydney and Melbourne when Australian daylight saving is in force between October and April. Brisbane does not observe daylight saving, so it stays two hours ahead all year. Perth is on the same time as Bali permanently.
What is the time difference between Bali and the UK?
Bali is seven hours ahead of the UK during British summer time, from late March to late October, and eight hours ahead for the rest of the year.
Is Bali in the same time zone as Jakarta?
No. Jakarta is on WIB, UTC+7, and Bali is on WITA, UTC+8. Bali is one hour ahead of the Indonesian capital, which surprises a lot of travellers connecting through Jakarta.
What time zone should I set for a booking in Bali?
Use Asia/Makassar. That is the zone identifier Bali belongs to in the international time-zone database, and it is what calendar and booking systems expect. Selecting a city in Sulawesi to get Bali's time is correct, not a mistake.
