Nirjhara and the Environment

Nirjhara’s approach to sustainable luxury centers on three core pillars: Community, Land and Climate. We acknowledge that Bali’s constantly growing popularity threatens the island’s environment and we firmly believe that treating our natural surroundings with the utmost respect is the only way of preserving the aura that has made this place so special to begin with.

Nirjhara

Community

Nirjhara takes active steps to positively impact the wellbeing of the local community. An outreach program fosters stronger relations between the resort and villagers by actively supporting traditional events and religious ceremonies. Several major renovation projects have been financed, including upgrading public roads and revitalizing the local middle school. Besides employing over half of our workforce from neighboring villages, the resort is the leading supporter of Kedungu's microcredit initiative, helping local entrepreneurs reach their objectives.

Nirjhara

Land

Nirjhara’s steadfast determination to preserve the natural environment of the island begins at a local level. With a state-of-the-art water filtration and bottling plant on property, all water used on property, in the villas and in the kitchen is purified, negating the need for plastic bottles and water gallons, and eliminating the risk of contamination. In addition to recycling, Nirjhara bans all single-use plastic in villas and guest areas to significantly reduce any superfluous waste and keep Kedungu clean. An innovative wastewater management system was implemented to filter and purify all sewage and ensure that no contaminated water is released into the nearby ocean, river and surrounding rice fields.

Nirjhara

Climate

Nirjhara was built from the ground up following environmentally sustainable principles; the hotel’s design favors the use of locally sourced materials such as natural stone found in the archipelago and reclaimed hevea wood procured from rubber plantations. Careful consideration was given to reduce energy use, ranging from the orientation of each villa and the installation of high quality thermal insulation to the fitting of heat pumps and solar water heaters.
